The Award

amateur radio hero The award is presented to an amateur that selflessly went above and beyond in providing their skills, equipment, and time for communications duty in public service during a disaster, disaster recovery or moment of need.

The Orlando HamCation committee will bestow the award. The HamCation Awards committee will oversee the nomination and screening process.

Requirements/Eligibility

  • Can be a member of an emergency communications organization or an individual member of the amateur radio community who has provided communications to a community during a disaster or to an individual or group in a moment of need to save a life or protect property.
  • The amateur radio support provided was critical in ensuring that the event was resolved with a safe and secure outcome.
  • Must be a current licensed amateur radio operator.

NOTE: Candidates for this award may be nominated for past service even though they may not be currently active. However, eligibility requirements and all selection criteria apply to all nominees

Nominations must be received by November 1 to be considered for an award to be bestowed at HamCation in February of the following year.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated dedication to providing public service over time or in a moment of critical need where their contribution was vital to ensuring a safe and secure outcome.
  2. Used creative and critical thinking to resolve an immediate need using the resources of amateur radio equipment and operating skills.
  3. Communicated through amateur radio the details of an emergency which identified with clarity, ensuring that the required authorities were alerted and the required resources requested.
  4. Enacted emergency procedures in passing messages to others in the amateur radio community to provide additional resources when required.
  5. Maintained radio contact throughout the emergency or disaster in a manner that ensured that others were informed of the help needed and the criticality of time in providing it.
  6. Collaborated with local authorities to coordinate activities and provide support for radio traffic handling as long as needed.

Materials Required For Nomination

  • Provide a detailed account of the event(s) that made the individual or team meet the eligibility requirements in a summary of the event where the activity took place.
  • The summary shall identify the contribution(s) of the individual or team that were critical in saving lives, protecting property, or ensuring communications support that was essential in ensuring a safe outcome.
  • Provide the callsigns and full name of the individual or each member of a team.

Additional Materials That Would Support a Nomination

  • Details of ARES, CERT or other groups that the individual or team are members of.
  • Provide photographs of the individual or team.
  • Provide any newspaper of TV coverage references for the event.
  • Provide endorsements from other radio amateurs who witnessed the event or monitored the radio traffic.
  • Lessons learned that were taken away from this event.
